New Canary Coloring Instructions

By Kevin Wirick

Your bird has been fed a mixture of canary seed, rape, flax, niger, and sesame seed for his basic diet. He also enjoys fresh fruit and vegetables. Canaries do not need to be covered in the evening IF they are kept in a room where there is no artificial light after the sun goes down. If however, your bird is in your living area I would suggest you cover him around 7 p.m.

Bisko sold in 1 KG (2.2 pound) container for $3.90. To one teaspoon of dry mixture add 1/4-teaspoon warm water (approx. 120 degrees) or a 1:4 ratio. Discard what you do not need after 24 hours. Feed 1 teaspoon daily in addition to their dry seed. When the birds are moulting (late May or June) you will need to add the coloring agent to the water.

During the warm months of the year, the canaries moult and will replace their feathers. You must feed your birds a coloring agent to keep the color in your birds. I would recommend the following products that I purchase from Miami Pet Supply, 3601 N. W, 54th Street, Miami, FL 33142. Phone (305) 635-4800 Fax (305) 63509658. They do accept credit cards, which speed up delivery.

Bogina is sold in 10-gram packages for $3.70. I normally ad 1 gram Carophil which is .35 per gram to the Bogina which works out to a 10:1 ratio which gives the best color. This is the total coloring agent that will need to be added to the dry mixture.

To 1 cup of dry mixture, add 1 teaspoon of coloring agent. Keep this mixture dry and use only the amounts your bird will eat in a day. For a single pet bird I would recommend 1 teaspoons of dry to ¼ teaspoon of warm water and let sit for a minute. Fluff with fork and feed at least once each day. If you have a lot of birds I would recommend 1 cup of dry to 1/3 cup warm water.

Be sure to clean your birds cage paper daily and provide fresh water daily. Provide fresh fruit and/or vegetables every few days. During the moult limit your fruit/vegetables because you want the birds to eat the coloring agent.

Order: Bisko, Bogena and Carophil
